London, Milner and Company, No date [c.1860]. Cloth. This scarce work of mid-nineteenth-century American children's fiction published anonymously by Charlotte Elizabeth Bowen. Undated, however this edition published circa 1860 according to records at the University of Liverpool Library.Illustrated with a monochrome plate frontispiece.Full bound in the original publisher's decorated cloth with a floral paper label to the front board.Includes four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work.Scarce.This is a mid-nineteenth-century work for children by Charlotte Elizabeth Bowen, the author of Timid Lucy and Heart and Hand, who published the majority of her works anonymously or under the pseudonym Sarah Schoonmaker Baker. In its description of a devoted, black caregiver to two white children and their collective adventures, it includes stark examples of the racist stereotypes perpetuated in American culture during the transatlantic slave trade. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with some minor handling marks, slight discolouration to the front board's paper label sticker, and a small damp stain to the cloth at the rear. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities, and rubbing to the fore edge resulting in fractional lifting and splitting of the cloth. Gift inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, binding firm. Pages are a trifle age toned however generally clean with the occasional spot or light handling mark. A very good copy indeed given the age and scarcity of the work. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .
